/NSE Holiday

India's calendar is packed with festivals, and the stock market definitely takes notice. The NSE and BSE shut down for over a dozen days each year to mark these occasions.
But tracking these closures is not just a formality. It is a core part of your trading and investing strategy. Miss a holiday, and you risk sudden settlement headaches, trapped funds in BTST trades, or ruined intraday setups.
Knowing exactly when the trading bells stop ringing lets you time your portfolio moves, manage liquidity, and ensure your long-term SIPs don't hit a snag.
Here is the complete, verified list of NSE and BSE Holidays in 2026. Let us look at the exact days the market goes dark.
If you trade cash equities, F&O, or use the Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) segment, the market is completely closed on these dates:

Note: Cross-checking multi-exchange dates? No worries! as both exchanges consult each other. If NSE is closed for a festival, BSE is closed too.
A few public holidays land right on a Saturday or Sunday. Since the NSE is already shut on weekends, these don't impact your trading routine.
Still, it helps to know which festivals fall on weekends for your personal planning:
| Date | Day | Holiday / Occasion |
|---|---|---|
| February 15, 2026 | Sunday | Mahashivratri |
| March 21, 2026 | Saturday | Id-Ul-Fitr (Ramadan Eid) |
| August 15, 2026 | Saturday | Independence Day |
| November 08, 2026 | Sunday | Diwali Laxmi Pujan |
Diwali brings a unique trading window called Muhurat Trading. The market actually opens for about an hour on the evening of Laxmi Pujan. It is an old tradition where traders book a token trade for prosperity.
Note: On Sunday the market will remain open on Diwali Laxmi Pujan (i.e., Muhurat Trading) for one hour.
Commodity traders need to pay close attention here. The NSE splits commodity trading into two blocks: Morning (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) and Evening (5:00 PM to 11:30/11:55 PM).
On most holidays, the morning session is closed, but the evening session stays open to sync with global market hours. Check the table below before placing trades.

Are stock market holidays the same for NSE and BSE? Yes. Both exchanges follow the same circulars, so their trading closures match almost perfectly. MCX follows a slightly different schedule for evening sessions.
Watch out for Settlement Holidays too. These are days when the market is open, but the depositories (NSDL/CDSL) are closed. If you do BTST (Buy Today, Sell Tomorrow) trades, shares won't settle on these days. April 1 (Annual Bank Closing) is a classic example.
If a national holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, you get a three-day break. 2026 is packed with these. Smart traders use these long weekends to unwind, while others prepare for the next week's gap-up or gap-down openings.
Here are the major long weekends to plan your trades around:
Equities trade Monday to Friday. You don't want your orders sitting in a pre-open queue by mistake. Here is the daily schedule:
Note: For Commodity Derivatives, trading runs from 09:00 AM straight to 11:30 PM (sometimes 11:55 PM depending on US daylight saving time).
No. Both NSE and BSE remain completely closed on Saturdays and Sundays for the equity segment. There is no regular trading on weekends, except for special occasions like Muhurat Trading on Diwali.
Almost always, yes. Both exchanges consult each other and the government before releasing the annual holiday calendar. If NSE is closed for a festival, BSE is closed too.
A settlement holiday is a day when the stock market is open for trading, but the depositories (NSDL and CDSL) are closed. This means shares bought or sold won't be delivered to your demat account on that day. Banks are usually closed on these days too.
Yes. Muhurat Trading will take place on Sunday, November 8, 2026, for Diwali Laxmi Pujan. The market will open for about an hour in the evening. The exact timings will be announced by the NSE closer to the date.
Yes. Commodity derivatives trade from 9:00 AM to 11:30 PM (or 11:55 PM). Because they track global markets, the evening session often remains open even when the morning session is closed for a national holiday.
Active traders stress over market holidays. Long-term investors don't.
A closed stock market doesn't stop your wealth from compounding. Your Mutual Fund NAVs still calculate, and your SIPs keep averaging out your investment cost in the background.
But a quiet market is the best excuse to step back and look at the bigger picture. Are your mutual funds actually beating inflation? Does your Portfolio Management Service (PMS) align with your current risk profile? Are your SIPs spread across the right sectors?
We don't manufacture financial products. We are independent wealth managers and distributors. That means we don't push our own mutual funds or PMS strategies. Instead, we scan the entire market to find the absolute best funds, SIPs, and wealth management solutions tailored to your goals. We filter the noise so you get unbiased, high-performing investments.
